Knotts and Griffith as their characters in a still taken from the Octoone-hour variety special The Andy Griffith, Don Knotts, and Jim Nabors Show On October 3, 1960, at 9:30 p.m., The Andy Griffith Show made its debut. General Foods, sponsor of The Danny Thomas Show, had first access to the spin-off and committed to it immediately. Future players in The Andy Griffith Show, Bavier and Howard, appeared in the episode as townspeople Henrietta Perkins and Opie Taylor (the sheriff's son), respectively. In the episode, Griffith played fictional Sheriff Andy Taylor of Mayberry, North Carolina, who arrests Danny Williams (Thomas' character) for running a stop sign. On February 15, 1960, The Danny Thomas Show episode "Danny Meets Andy Griffith" aired. After conferences between Leonard and Griffith in New York City, Griffith flew to Los Angeles and filmed the episode. At the time, Broadway, film, and radio star Griffith was interested in attempting a television role, and the William Morris Agency told Leonard that Griffith's rural background and previous rustic characterizations were suited to the part. Sheldon Leonard-producer of The Danny Thomas Show-and Danny Thomas hired veteran comedy writer Arthur Stander (who had written many of the "Danny Thomas" episodes) to create a pilot show for Griffith, featuring him as justice of the peace and newspaper editor in a small town. 2.1 Griffith's development of Andy Taylor.Mayberry Days, an annual festival celebrating the sitcom, is held each year in Griffith's hometown, Mount Airy, North Carolina. Reruns of The Andy Griffith Show are often shown on TV Land, MeTV, The CW, Pluto TV, and SundanceTV. In the new format, it ran for 78 episodes, ending in 1971 after three seasons. (1964–1969) and a reunion telemovie, Return to Mayberry (1986).Īfter the eighth season, when Griffith left the series, it was retitled Mayberry, R.F.D., with Ken Berry and Buddy Foster replacing Griffith and Howard in new roles. The series spawned its own spin-off- Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. Though neither Griffith nor the show won awards during its eight-season run, co-stars Knotts and Bavier accumulated a combined total of six Emmy Awards. On separate occasions, it has been ranked by TV Guide as the ninth- and thirteenth-best series in American television history. The only other shows to end their runs at the top of the ratings are I Love Lucy (1957) and Seinfeld (1998). The series never placed lower than seventh in the Nielsen ratings, ending its final season at number one. ![]() It was, when we were doing it, of a time gone by." ![]() ![]() But this is just another one of those "here we go again" endings which in truth I'm sick of. And "A Bunch Of Baby Ducks" and even "Weekend At Benson's" had at least funny endings even if you sort of saw them coming. ![]() "Camping Can Be Cool" and "Skips Vs Technology" had very solid good endings. And it's not like that's impossible for the show. And actually this is something I've commented on about Regular Show: the good episodes of this series are the ones that start well with comedy, have good action in the middle and then have THIS kind of ending, while the great episodes have comedy beginning, action middle and either a funny or satisfying ending. Okay I'm going to be the one who has to say it: that ending was lame. That plus the opening with Mordeci and Rigby making fun and liking that cop show where the guy just flipped everything he drove in every ep made this a good one but. ![]() And I also really liked how there was this build to the challenge being how you ate the eggs and it being a choice in which hat you should pick as well. That and Benson apologizing and even Mordeci sort of apologizing are good character moments that do show a good sense of group dynamics that these guys have that even if they have problems with each other there's a reason they can all live together. I liked how Rigby lost instantly because he was allergic to eggs (which was a good fakeout instead of it just being his desire and eyes being bigger then his stomach) as well as Mordeci flipping out on Benson for saying Rigby should just been working when he was on a hospital bed and wanting to get the hat for his friend. There's a time and place for everything.Sorry I just saw this episode today and wanted to comment on it so forgive me for being late on talking about this one but I want to say something anyway. * JerkassHasAPoint: Benson wasn't entirely wrong when chastising Mordecai for getting himself and Rigby into the mess they're in right now, ''but'' it ''wasn't the best time to say such a thing and that's where he went wrong - ''very'' wrong. When the workers try to stop Mordecai from completing the challenge it's because of a problem none of the park crew are aware of that will be life or death for Mordecai. The manager is understanding and sympathetic, only refusing to sell Mordecai the hat outright because store policy prevents him from doing so. Here the restaurant workers are actually reasonable and as helpful as they can be under the circumstance, really only roadblocked by the store's policies. Most episodes have the crew dealing with someone that is either just a looking for trouble or someone functioning on a ] that they unknowingly cross. He also goes the extra mile and says Benson's lousy behavior is why he has no friends, with the park crew only spending any time with him because he signs their paychecks. Mordecai loses it and attacks Benson, telling the grouch that not everything is about their job and, despite what he was doing before was impulsive and stupid, Rigby doesn't deserve being stuck in a coma. Here Benson decides to harp on them about poor work ethic and essentially blame Rigby for nearly getting himself killed.
